Copywriting Brands

What makes a brand? Colours, shapes, personalities, taglines, and packaging are characteristics that help define a brand. Ultimately, a brand is a mental construct, created in the minds of the product’s consumers, not the product’s builders.

Brands are crafted in cafés, bus stops, malls, parks, and public galleries, not in offices and agencies. That’s where each of the characteristics are put together.

This copywriting class takes a hard look into the psyche of our consumer-driven cultures. Let’s question and explore the intrinsic relationships between client product creation and audience brand ownership.

Design Thinking

What’s the difference between design and art? When a company like Apple makes a product, is it driven by form or function? Or both? Design thinking is a critical communication skill that demands intuition as much as mathematics, ratios, physical theories and context.

Design thinking is the practice and application of logic and structure which appeals to the human mind as much as it does the human sensibilities. When you design — posters, speeches, campaigns, cars, and brands — you are working on the cusp of science and art.

This copywriting class examines the principles of design and its evolution from early civilisations to modern-day structures. We will learn how to cultivate a mind for design thinking and apply this to the processes of copywriting and content creation.

Semantics

When you misspell your name in a word processor you get red squiggly lines, but in Google your name is automagically corrected. Isn’t that something? How does Google know this? What does linear algebra and set theory have to do with copywriting and content marketing?

Semantics is the study of words and their meaning, and how humans derive these meanings from association, context, and social influences. To know semantics is to know a great deal about human language patterns, and about how machine learning happens.

This copywriting class focuses on the power of semantics and its impact on companies like Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Facebook. We will learn about the revolution that’s currently underway, and how these companies are integrating semantics at a fundamental level of computing.

Taglines

Taglines, the good ones, have an unstoppable way of nestling deep within our sub-conscious minds where we automagically commit them to memory. Recall a tagline and you recall an entire product offering, packaged beautifully within the wrappers of a brand.

Writing compelling taglines is about building a personality out of images, associations, verbs, and rhythms, then carving out a nice little house in the minds of consumers for the tagline to live in. In other words, taglines are as much about brands as they are about the human brain.

This copywriting class dives into the process of creating a tagline, then extends that process to related areas, including email subject lines, newsletter headings, and public speaking. We will learn how companies like Nike, McDonalds, and Subway use their taglines to influence the world, one pixel at a time.
